You will find a Growler in the air, under
water, and behind a horse!!
It is also a jeep, a
motorcycle part, a sub-woofer, a pork-pie and a fish ... but it is at its best
when a Growler is carrying beer!
In
the 1800's you would bring home draft beer from the tavern in buckets -
the original 'Pail ale'! As the beer sloshed around the
CO2 escaped
creating a rumbling sound through the lid, thus coining the term "growler".
According
to 'The Beer Drinkers Bible': "children were sent on the errand of running to
the tavern with an empty growler and returning home with a full one.
They
were instructed to "Rush the Growler".
With the convenience of
liquor stores, bottling plants and canned beer, this quaint custom and
classic container soon died out.
However a group of
committed historians, thirsty for the incomparable taste of freshly brewed
beer direct from the brewery tap continue the tradition to the
day.
We
are all committed to Camra - the Campaign for Real Ale and are very particular about getting our beer in its natural state, fresh
from the spigot before it is treated
for bottles and
cans. This packaged beer is 'heat-tunnel pasteurized' before
shipping, taking away much of its natural flavour.
The
preservatives and carbonation
that are injected to ensure a long shelf life makes canned beer bubbly, and gives
the drinker more gas than fresh beer from a Grrrowler!
You will find us at micro-breweries
and brew-pubs all over the world, lining
up with our 2 liter glass flagons begging the brew-master for mothers milk
direct from the udder! We
take on menial tasks - washing down old barrels, cleaning floors, scrubbing toilets,
detailing cars - anything to get a quick fill of the Growler!
