Play More Golf - Eat More Chocolate!!

Do you like golf? Well you should play more!

Go on! Get out there and play a round …. if that is your goal. If golf is what you want to do, then you should be playing two rounds before breakfast. In fact you should really be playing NOW!

I mean that you should play more golf if your dream is to be a professional golfer! If you feel that you could make a living out of this sport then play as much as you can and when you feel the time is right to take on Tiger Woods you should quit your regular job and get out there on the professional circuit!

However, if your dream is to become an journalist, then a round of golf is a good 4 hours wasted, because you could be using that time to work on your next article.

For me, golf was a Waste of precious Time that I should have been spending on trying to get a job in the whisky trade! This might explain my terrible handicap! Ironically I now get paid to play Pebble Beach in the kilt!

DON’T LET A PASS-TIME YOU BY

Sure, your weekend golf may be a great way of relaxing after a tough week in the office, but don’t let your golf become a band-aid for the real problem at hand!

Right now is the time to focus all of your energy into making a paradigm shift into a better job, a more satisfying life. Once you have got yourself that dream job, then you can get back on the golf course!

I am not picking on golf – I am talking about anything you do with your free time which doesn’t get you to where you want to go! I like to use the word ‘pastimes’ because that is what they do – they pass the time - time that you could be spending attaining your goals!

‘When you kill time you may be murdering opportunity!’

If you spend your time on pastimes, then that is precisely what will happen - time will eventually pass you by and become 'past times'! Believe me, the dates in the calendar are closer than they seem! Time will catch you up with you and if you aren’t aggressive with the daily details now. You might come to the end of your life never having addressed your lifetime goals.

TEMPUS FUGIT

'Whenever anyone asks me the time I never need to look at my watch. I just look them in the eyes and whisper 'The time is now'! Think about it: the future does not exist and the past is gone. Now is the only time that it ever is.

Say the word 'NOW' out loud and by the time you reach the 'w', the 'n' is already in history. The now is very quick indeed!

'Our lives are just as short. Blink twice. If the whole of the earth's existence was reduced to a year, your life-span would be the time between those blinks. As far as the world is concerned, your life is momentarily inconsequential. Oh, the whole of time maybe infinite, but your own lifetime is absolutely finite.’

'The earth revolves at 200 miles per hour, and yet everything around us seems still - so it is with time in a man’s life’. Time flies!

STUDENT MINI-LECTURE

I wrote this little introduction to a talk I gave on Time Management in my last year of studying Accountancy at Edinburgh University.

I was amazed at how much time my fellow students wasted while they were in college. They seemed to think that these few years would last forever. I wanted these first years to realize how quickly this time would pass them by if they didn’t grab it now and start to work on their dreams.

As I was only a student myself, lecturing other students I had to make it fun and different, and so I started my mini-lecture with … a Mars Bar!

'EAT MORE CHOCOLATE'

‘Take a bite!’ I told them. ‘Go on, take a big bite of the mars bar. Good isn’t it!’ (I felt like Willy Wonka!)

‘Now take another … and another … and start to notice how the bites get smaller. At the end you are going to be nibbling, biting off tiny slivers trying to make it last, licking up the crumbs with your finger and wishing that you had not taken such a big bite to begin with!

So it is with these three years in college. You take huge chunks out of it in your first year, when you have so much time stretching ahead of you, but when you get to your finals you begin to squeeze more out of each moment!’ Now is the time to seize the moment – Carpe Dieum!

I wrote a booklet to accompany the lecture. It went something like this ...

                              ===============================

“Life is a huge pool of potential, yet many drown in the daily detail while others seem to surf along to their desired goals."

"All you need is a system like TIME MASTER to control the daily details of your life, reducing stress and freeing time. Then you can use TIME MASTER to harness all of your energy and dedicate it to accomplishing your dreams."

"You have the power to decide which you will be. You are the one that lets time pull you underwater, and only you have the power to pull yourself up. You alone are the oasis in your own desert."

"We all have the same amount of this resource time, and yours is there for you to use or waste as you please. Anyone can become a TIME MASTER. Just dream of what you want to do with your short life, then realise that the only thing that separates you from your dreams is time.    ... and what is the time? The time is now!"

‘All you have to do is rid your life from the single biggest time waster   .... and do you know what that is? No, its not coffee breaks, crosswords or television; the biggest time waster in your life is you!’

The same lessons I learned in college can help you now. If you have the time (!) you might want to read the little story I wrote to accompany the idea. A little story entitled ....

THE CURIOUS TALE OF DROWNING JAMES AND SURFING SAM
