Here
is an outline of the story I wrote to accompany the article.
It is the tale of two students who both have the
same amount of time on their hands. However, James is so unorganized it is
as if he is being pulled underwater - drowning under a sea of chores and
clutter. He ends up squandering a whole year of time at college.
The other character is organized, conscious of
time passing and so is in full control of his life! He seems to be surfing
along to his destination, fulfilling his dreams hence his name - 'Surfing
Sam'.
“Time
is the same for everyone. Both James and Sam have 24 hours pulling them
through the day, but James is Drowning while Sam is Surfing!
How did Sam do it? Well he was inspired by a
single sentence:
‘What you do with your life is the sum
total of what you do everyday.’
Think about that for a moment. Your ultimate
success is the total of thousands of small daily strivings. Take care of
today, and tomorrow will take care of itself! You have to Manage your Time
Today in order to attain your Goals Tomorrow.
Sam realized that what ever he was going to
accomplish at the end of his college years, had to be done on a daily
basis, and he had to start now.
Oh
sure, when he began these life goals were huge, they seemed as impossible
as leaping the Grand Canyon in a single bound! But, as you will read, Sam
crossed the chasm by getting his feet wet - he went down and crossed it
one step at a time, using Stepping Stones to cross the river. He split his
large dreams into manageable tasks and was then able to concentrate on one
single daunting task, crossing a huge chasm just one step at a time.
It was Sir Winston Churchill who said - ‘It is a
mistake to try to look too far ahead – the chain of destiny can only be
grasped one link at a time’.
He also understood
the concept of using Stepping Stones to cross a river.
‘Todays preparation determines tomorrows
achievement. The future belongs to those who prepare for it!’
Most of us only realize this when it is too late.
We look back at our lives and realize we should have done more when we
were young. You hear it all the time: 'I wish I had stuck with the piano
lessons – I could have been on stage instead of watching a concert of
someone who did!'
DISCLAIMER!!!
Before you read the whole story, I would like to
make this disclaimer that I am showing you something that I
wrote in my first year of college (1985 - a long time ago!)
It is in its original format as I can't be bothered
correcting it because I would end up
re-writing the whole thing and its more interesting to read what I was
thinking when I was in high school! It shows me how I was planning to get this dream job way
before I even got into Accountancy!
If
you have the Time, you can read The Entire Story of The Curious Tale of
Drowning Games and Surfing Sam
However,
if you understood the basic outline above, you might want to go straight to the Temple
of Time!
