Here
is an outline of the story I wrote to accompany the article.
It is the tale of two students who both have the
same amount of time on their hands. However, James is so unorganized it is
as if he is being pulled underwater - drowning under a sea of chores and
clutter. He ends up squandering a whole year of time at college.
The other character is organized, conscious of
time passing and so is in full control of his life! He seems to be surfing
along to his destination, fulfilling his dreams hence his name - 'Surfing
Sam'.
“Time
is the same for everyone. Both James and Sam have 24 hours pulling them
through the day, but James is Drowning while Sam is Surfing!
How did Sam do it? Well he was inspired by a
single sentence:
‘What you do with your life is the sum
total of what you do everyday.’
Only
a few people realize just how precious time is, and I call them TIME
MASTERS. They know that what they get out if your life is the sum total
of what they do every day and so they make the most out of every single
moment. In doing so, they fulfill their dreams.
Dream big and don't be put off with the
size of your dreams because if you just take a step at a time, then no
river is too wide and you can do anything that you want to do!
Think about that for a moment. Your ultimate
success is the total of thousands of small daily strivings. Take care of
today, and tomorrow will take care of itself! You have to Manage your Time
Today in order to attain your Goals Tomorrow and fulfill your dreams.
Sam realized that what ever he was going to
accomplish at the end of his college years, had to be done on a daily
basis, and he had to start now.
Oh
sure, when he began these life goals were huge, they seemed as impossible
as leaping the Grand Canyon in a single bound! But, as you will read, Sam
crossed the chasm by getting his feet wet - he went down and crossed it
one step at a time, using Stepping Stones to cross the river. He split his
large dreams into manageable tasks and was then able to concentrate on one
single daunting task, crossing a huge chasm just one step at a time.
It was Sir Winston Churchill who said - ‘It is a
mistake to try to look too far ahead – the chain of destiny can only be
grasped one link at a time’.
He also understood
the concept of using Stepping Stones to cross a river.
‘Todays preparation determines tomorrows
achievement. The future belongs to those who prepare for it!’
Most people only realize this when it is too late.
They look back at their lives and realize they should have done more when
they were young. You hear it all the time: 'I wish I had stuck with the piano
lessons – I could have been on stage instead of watching a concert of
someone who did!'
They do not realize this
truth about time and constantly put things off until tomorrow. One of
these days there will be no tomorrow, and their short lives will be over,
those dreams left undone
This
is how I saw many of my fellow students and this is how I ended my little
paper.
YOU ARE THE OASIS IN YOUR OWN DESERT
The student environment is a huge pool
of potential, yet many drown in the daily detail while others seem to
surf along to their desired goals.
You have passed the first and most important lesson already
if you have realized the value of your time. All you have to do is rid
your life from the single biggest time waster ....
and do you know what that is? No, its not coffee breaks, crosswords or
television; the biggest time waster in your life is you!
You have the power to decide which you
will be. You are the one that lets time pull you underwater, and only
you have the power to pull yourself up - you alone are the oasis in your
own desert.
All you need is a system like TIME MASTER to
control the daily details of your life, reducing stress and freeing
time. Then you can use TIME MASTER to harness all of your energy and
dedicate it to accomplishing your dreams.
We all have the same amount of this
resource time, and yours is there for you to use or waste as you please.
Anyone can become a TIME MASTER. Just dream of what you want to do with
your short life, then realise that the only thing that separates you
from your dreams is time.
...
and what is the time? The time is now!
Where do you learn to become a Time Master? Well I
can tell you how Sam learnt the value of time, for I wrote a sequel
explaining all this entitled "Surfing Sam and The Temple of
Time"!
DISCLAIMER!!!
Before you read the sequel to this story, I would
like to make this disclaimer that I am showing you something that I wrote
when I was at college. It is in its original format as I can't be bothered
correcting it because I would end up
re-writing the whole thing and its more interesting to read what I was
thinking when I was in school! It shows me how I was planning to get this dream job way
before I even got into Accountancy!
Read the Temple
of Time!
